NC State University Eat Smart Move More Program Feedback Study

Background

NC State Department of Agriculture and Human Sciences established the Eat Smart, Move More, Prevent Diabetes campaign (ESMMPD), a CDC-recognized diabetes prevention program available for those who have been diagnosed with prediabetes, or who are at risk for developing type 2 diabetes.

Challenges

Reaching marginalized communities, including the Black community & Spanish speaking communities with health and wellness messaging. Gaining access, trust, and removing barriers to participation.

What We Did

Civility Localized facilitated 10 Focus Groups designed to help participants download their experiences in meaningful ways. Civility Localized utilized targeted email marketing, Spanish-language email invites, social media posts, and follow-up reminders to encourage former and current program participants to sign up and attend each focus group.

Using the data collected, Civility Localized developed recommendations for the 12-month program regarding participants' cultural, motivational, and programmatic reactions to the program and whether they experienced a behavior change through weight loss and/or more instances of healthy eating habits and active lifestyle. These recommendations were designed to help the program make informed decisions in the future.
